Description
The Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama is currently recruiting candidates for the position of Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the level of Professor. This is an outstanding opportunity for a visionary physician to guide a thriving academic department with a broad scope of clinical, educational, and research activities.
The Chair will oversee all aspects of the department, including the department’s Obstetrics and Sports Medicine programs, and will collaborate closely with AltaPointe Health and Accordia Health, where USA Health Family Medicine physicians staff clinics. The Chair will also coordinate hospital call and inpatient coverage to ensure high-quality, continuous patient care. This role offers the chance to shape the future of primary care in our region, expand community partnerships, and enhance training opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership across clinical care, medical education, research, and community engagement.
- Strengthen partnerships with AltaPointe and Accordia to expand access to care and improve community health outcomes.
- Lead the department’s Obstetrics and Sports Medicine programs, ensuring high-quality patient care, innovative training opportunities, and strong collaboration with other specialties.
- Partner with the Dean and health system leadership to set and implement strategic priorities that align with USA Health’s mission and goals.
- Recruit, retain, and mentor faculty, medical students, residents, and fellows; foster an environment that supports academic productivity, professional development, and physician well-being.
- Advance scholarly activity and curriculum innovation within the department.
- Provide leadership to enhance patient-centered care, quality, safety, and patient experience in both outpatient and inpatient family medicine services.
- Develop innovative programs and community partnerships to expand access to primary care and improve population health outcomes.
- Promote and grow research and scholarly activity within the department, with emphasis on community-based, primary care, and program-specific research.
Qualifications
- MD, DO, or equivalent; board certification in Family Medicine.
- Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Alabama.
